If we never make the decision to mature, it will never happen. Jesus gives clear markers we can study to understand what maturing looks like - and what it does not.

Jesus promised the coming of the Helper - the Holy Spirit!

In John 15-17, Jesus said that the Spirit would help His people mature and be unified, and He made some other pretty incredible promises! Some promises He gave exclusively to the Apostles. The Spirit would help them, specifically, to bring the church to spiritual maturity while still in its infancy.

And that's exactly what happened! As the Apostles shared God's word, the Spirit provided miracles to confirm the truth of their message, and allowed them to pass on miraculous gifts to new Christians by physically laying hands on them. These miraculous gifts helped Christians in the first century preserve and share the truth while the writing of the New Testament was still in progress.

We learn from studying the experiences with miraculous gifts in the first century that some Christians misused them for self-glorification. One principle we can apply to our lives today is that, even without miraculous gifts, it is essential to focus on edifying others and glorifying God, rather than immaturely glorifying self!
